Sales grow in June and Brazilian retail sector starts to breathe

Brazilian retailers returned to breathe and closed June with a 3.0% growth in sales volume in relation to the same month of the previous year. The positive index broke a sequence of nine consecutive quarters of negative rates and boosted the industry.
According to the IBGE’s Monthly Survey of Commerce, in the accumulated of the last 12 months the volume of sales continued in the negative with falls of 3.0%. Nominal revenue, however, grew and closed the year with a rise of 3.2%. Year-to-date remained stable, registering -0.1%, but sales volume grew and reached 1.9% positive.
Considering the expanded retail trade, which also includes the activities of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, sales volume grew by 4.4% in June compared to the previous year.

Retail grew 1.2% when compared to May and June this month. The segments that stood out the most in the monthly comparison were Furniture and household appliances (2.2%); Fabrics, clothing and footwear (5.4%); Other articles of personal and domestic use (2,7%), Fuels and lubricants (1,2%); Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, perfumery and cosmetics articles (1,5%); And Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (4.5%).
In the comparison between June 2017 and June 2016, the segments that most impacted the formation of the overall rate were furniture and household appliances (12.7%), textiles, clothing and footwear (4.6%); Other articles for personal and domestic use (4.3%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.8%).
Sales amount
The June festivities boosted sales growth of 4.6% in the Fabrics, clothing and footwear segment, when compared to the same month of 2016.
E-commerce and the increase in income of the population impacted the sales volume of the segment Other articles of personal and domestic use, which grew 4.3%. The segment encompasses department stores, optics, jewelery, sporting goods and so on.
The segment of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, which made the third largest contribution to the general index for the month of June, increased by 0.8% in sales volume compared to the same month in 2016.

Despite negative quarterly declines, the strong June result did not prevent the biannual index from recording the fifth consecutive period of negative rates. The institution points out, however, that the variation (-0.1%) is the lowest for this type of comparison since the first half of 2015.
For the specialists of the institution, the profile of the results for the first six months of the year showed greater dynamism in specific segments such as Furniture and Fabrics, as well as the reduction of the rhythm of total sales falls in the second half of 2016 (-5.6%), For the first half of the year.
